Carlitos the Citron-Crested Cockatoo by KristynJanelle Carlitos the Citron-Crested Cockatoo by KristynJanelle
Alright, so a brief backstory behind this drawing :

I drew a citron-crested cockatoo already [link], with the intention of giving it to the woman who I am adopting a citron and galah from. She liked the galah drawing, but wanted the citron to be drawn more white (less color used for the shading) and with his crest up. She offered to pay but I figured since I am getting two birds, their cages, and everything else, and she is having to give up her pets, the least I can do is redraw Carlitos for her :)

Colored pencil on recycled paper, roughly 6 hours total.

I love both of them but I can't believe she wasn't happy with the first one! :O I think I like the first one the best though. ^ ^

I like the first one best, no idea why she was so unhappy with it, but whatever floats her boat! :XD:

Gorgeous work!

I like them both for different reasons! This ones pose is a little more majestic. Perhaps that's really how the lady wanted to remember her friend. :D

Yes I would agree, I think she wanted him to look more proud and puffed up than just sort of sitting there. I do like the colors of my original better, but I can see how the imperfect white I did sort of bothered her. Hopefully she will like this one better :)

I wouldn't call it imperfect. As artists we just tend to pay more attention to the colors that are actually there. Like, a black dog is not really totally pitch black, at least not when light hits it. It reflects all kinds of color. ;)

True, that is why I made the color choices I did on my original drawing. I noticed in my reference pictures that the light hit the feathers in a way that made the shadows a cool, almost blue color, and the highlights a golden one. So that's where the color choices came from. But to her it probably looked odd, so I had to redo it with just good old black and white :D

Right, it's a fine line. Art friends/mentors are always telling me to draw the color I see, but, family members, or friends not especially into art, sometimes ask...."Why is does it have this or that color?" They don't always see it until I point it out that it really is there....lol.

Yea, you could try just a hint of the color you see, maybe even just in an under layer. ;)
