Probably not the most accurate representation of this owl, but then again, I've never drawn an owl that I can remember, heh. The Laughing Owl was the only member of its genus, Sceloglaux, meaning "scoundrel owl". It was named for its call, a series of short bark-like noises that resembled laughter. The species was rare by the late 1800s, with the last recorded specimen found dead in New Zealand in 1914. However, stories have persisted of "mad-man laughter" in the forests of New Zealand, although there is no evidence beyond a few accounts. Some are still hopeful that the owl may be re-discovered.
Cause of Extinction : Introduction of predators such as pet cats, persecution for specimens.
