Spix's Macaw by KristynJanelle Spix's Macaw by KristynJanelle
Boy did this one take some work. I decided to try more detailed feathering than I normally would, please let me know what you think.

The Spix's Macaw is one of the most endangered species of parrots, possibly extinct in the wild. There are a little more than 80 known individuals left, all of them in captivity and working to repopulate the species, although it's a slow process. The 2011 movie Rio was based around the concept of Blu and Jewel being the last Spix's Macaws, although the movie refers to them by their nickname, "Blue Macaws".

This piece is for sale! Check out my Etsy shop this this and other listings : [link]

Awesome, you really improved, the only critic I can give you is that the head should be a little lighter :3, and I recently read that they're already extinct in nature u.u

My reference happened to be a specimen with a darker head than the average Spix's, and so I made the head fairly dark, then decided it didn't look right but it was too late to highlight it properly.

Thank you for the watch :)
I have been drawing birds since I was six or seven, however around age ten or so I lost interest and didn't pick it up again until I was almost nineteen. Jr. High/High School distracted me from my love of parrots unfortunately, lol. Drawing in general has been a very, very inconsistent hobby for most of my life :P

Lol that sounds familiar. After I graduated from high school I didn't draw for about 4 years. I then started on dragons. From there I gained interest because I am currently working on a story about dragons, so the more I drew dragons the better I got. Lol the only true thing I had an easy time drawing was birds, I had to get better at everything else, even dragons. Lol especially dragons. The muse comes and goes, I try not to draw if I don't have the urge to draw. Other times I might not have the urge but i start drawing and something good comes out of it. I try to draw something in pastel at least once a year.

Yeah I really don't urge myself to draw either, I'll go a month or so where I draw a lot and then I might go five months where I don't draw at all. And then it depends on the mood I am in, I am trying to improve upon my graphite skills :)

lol I can understand that. This picture [link] it took me a few months to draw it then I got this far with the coloring...lol haven't touched it for a year. I think it's about time I start up on it again. lol maybe that's why the bird seems to be glaring at me, maybe it wants to be finished.

Thank you very much. :D Yeah I was experimenting with different ways to draw feathers, depending on the reference picture the fibers can look very different so sometimes it's hard to know how to draw them :o
